The master of signals nodded, his hand to his helmet. Vigilator Ecladian looked up from his position in the ruins then back to the World Eaters leviathan dreadnought stalking down the street. It had been a tense game of cat and mouse for hours as the traitorous sons of Angron had moved on the loyalists Emperor's Children. Their trap was prepared: a motor pool of tanks remained beyond sight from the roving packs of rampagers, the leviathan, and the heavy support squad searching the night.
Suddenly master of signals Pertious came on squad comms. "Enemy drop pod support approaching. ETA two minutes. We've been made by shipboard reconnaissance. Advise that we initiate the first attack before their reinforcements arrive."
Ecladian nodded "Agreed. Leviathan is priority alpha." He raised a detonator in his hand and waited two breath lengths before pressing the button. Hidden bombs in the ruins occupied by the heavy support squad exploded, a brilliant orange flower in the night sky. "Execute attack," he said over the comms. The roar of tank engines mixed with the rhythmic firing of shatter shells and shouts of "For the Emperor!" The battle had begun.
This was the board set up for our Onslaught mission. Hammer and Anvil. Doug had rolled to deploy first and with his mostly drop pod army and leviathan on the board I set up defensively. In a change of fortune however I seized the initiative and focused my fire on his leviathan, killing it in my first round. I broke apart my armoured clump of tanks, rushing them all forward except for one tactical squad which I kept near the objective.
Doug quickly countered with all of his dreadnought drop pods striking accurately for the most part. He managed to take some hull points off of my rhinos but through a combination of smoke and night cover saves I managed to save quite a few vehicle damage rolls.
Doug's Praetor and melta tactical support squad in my back field. The dreadnought drop pod in front of them is housing a contemptor and is sitting on the objective they must reach.
A view from the Master of Signals.
Doug's turn two with more pods coming in, a Tactical squad on my objective to keep my scoring units off of it.
Legions dreads, both with siege wreckers swing mightily at each other. In the initial charge the EC dread loses his wrecker to his traitorous foe and eventually gets crushed under his attacks.
Doug's contemptor joins the fray, rushing toward one of my vindicators.
Which it promptly wrecks in close combat.
The praetor and the long meltagunner sergeant finish off the tactical squad rhino and prepare for the charge.
The victorious World Eaters dreadnought moments before he was struck down by shatter shells from the Quad Mortars.
Ancient Iustus issues a challenge to the World Eaters dreadnought after it leaves the Emperor's Children plasma support squad rhino-less.
The tactical squad rush forward, bolt pistols in hand before charging the Praetor and Sergeant.
One view of the aptly named "murder alley." You can see at the top where my remaining rhino with tactical squad made a desperate tank shock onto the objective.
My Javelin sweeps onto the table from reserves, just in the nick of time and finishes off the contemptor with a well placed multimelta shot. (Sorry about the M&Ms!)
The tactical squad were stuck in with the praetor who held his own after the sergeant was felled. Eventually the game ended with both objectives contested. I received one point for killing one enemy unit in the first round(Leviathan) and another for killing the most enemy units at the end of the game. Great game as always against Doug! He's getting craftier and this one became a right scrum especially in Murder Alley all the way down the center of the board. Can't wait for the rematch!
